Picking the Right Orange Tree

Fruit trees can be grown in hot, humid subtropical climates such as Florida or California. You are fortunate to be able to support practically any sort of plant as long as pests are kept at bay. Consider establishing an orange tree because they are usually easy to care for and provide some of the most delectable fruits. Because of its sweetness, juiciness, and distinct flavor, the orange is one of the world’s most popular fruits.

You should keep in mind that the orange tree can grow to be up to 50 feet tall in its later years, so plan accordingly. Even if you start with a small tree, plan ahead of time and position it in an open area where it will have lots of room to grow. If you make the same error I did, you will have to renovate your yard to excessive lengths, such as removing an entire shed. Simply take the required preparations ahead of time to avoid all of this trouble.

Fine sand with good drainage would be ideal for establishing an orange tree. Because the trees are known for reaching monster sizes and require a lot of support from below, the soil should be deep enough to allow for substantial root development. If your soil is shallow and readily flooded, you should either improve it or plant a different variety of tree. Trying to cultivate an orange tree in these conditions would almost certainly be disastrous.

The “Washington Navel” orange is one of the most popular varieties. It was most likely created by a mutation of other oranges. It began in Brazil around 1820 and spread to Florida within fifteen years. It is notable for being one of the largest oranges available. The peel or rind comes off easily. It is not as juicy as other oranges, but it has a strong flavor. These are the most commonly grown orange trees for commercial use. If you choose one of these trees, you won’t have to water it as frequently.

The “Trovita” orange is another kind. It was created in the early 1900s at a lab in California dedicated to experimenting with novel citrus varieties. It was first widely marketed around 1940. It has more seeds than a Washington Navel and has a milder flavor. However, it was created to be more adaptable to harsher, hotter, and drier circumstances that other forms of orange would not tolerate. Some of Florida’s most popular oranges right now are variations of this variety.

The ‘Valencia’ orange is one of the most juicy and flavorful. It is especially popular in South Africa and the southern states of the United States. Valencia oranges accounted for an unusually big percentage of the orange market until roughly 20 years ago due to their popularity. It is believed to have originated in China. It contains almost no seeds. The “Rhode Red Valencia” oranges are another Valencia orange subgroup. They were developed around 1960, making them slightly more recent than other varieties. Mutations happened, and the trees that developed as a result were huge and exceedingly hardy. The oranges are more delicious and less acidic than regular Valencia oranges.

Orange trees are a great thing to plant because you will be able to enjoy hundreds of delicious fruits every year with just a little effort in the planting process. Simply choose the orange that sounds the most appetizing and go with it! Of course, before purchasing a tree, you should consult a local expert to ensure that the type you want will thrive in your area. This is usually not a problem, but it is always a good idea to double-check before investing money and time.
